Odd Associations – Tarot Blog Hop

This post is part of the Imbolc Tarot Blog Hop, this time with the theme of “Odd Associations”. Please do take time to check out the other blogs I have linked to! Well, we’ve been asked to start this post with: There was this one time at Witch Camp:

Now then, not a lot of associations in my world strike me as being odd. In recovery, as in a life raft, people muck in together regardless of social status. Judges mix with parolees they sentenced, doctors mix with addicts they may have treated, teachers might bump into ex-students. And there seems to be nothing strange about this. There are no titles in fellowship, only first name terms, and we accept each other as equals, on a journey to recovery.

On this life raft of recovery we try and encourage those who might be tempted to jump back into the water to get into the middle of the boat, so they at least have some protection from those around them. We encourage those who have recovered their strength to sit nearer the edge and pick up the oars to help steer us all in the right direction. There is no discrimination, and no relationship is considered odd.

Working with recovering alcoholics and addicts has given me a challenge which has required me to muster all my tact and diplomacy. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the 12 step program, part of the journey to recovery requires us to find a Higher Power, a God of our own understanding, in which we can trust. This is vital and at the very core of recovery! After all, fighting everyone and everything got us nowhere, so now it is time to try a different tack. We sit back and trust that everything is exactly as it is supposed to be at this time. instead of fighting the current, we try to go with the flow.

So, what has this all to do with the cards? Well, the cards to me act as a messaging tool. Through them, people seem to believe I receive messages from God, which I am blessed with an ability to interpret (me? I just read the cards), and this can help us to make decisions. They say that Tarot tells us what we need to know, and once we know we can change our minds. And as Imbolc represents a time of new growth, this all fits perfectly!

I’ve found cards useful in helping sponsees to unravel their problems by first raising their awareness of the causes leading up to a problem, secondly to accept what effect this problem is having on their lives, and thirdly to help them choose what action to take to resolve their problem.

This is effectively a simple Past, Present Future Spread and I use it when answering Agony Aunt style questions which come in from local fellowship members. You can see plenty of these here: Quirky Questions.

Meantime, I have asked my cards how they can help my querents:

Awareness: Strength inverted

Acceptance: The Star inverted

Action: Three of Wands

Strength speaks to us of our attributes, those we can use to forge ahead with wisdom and courage. Inverted, it is referring to our weaknesses. The choices we have made which have led to our downfall. In the past I have often regarded this as a situation card, but now I see that it is not our situation which has been the problem, but how we have handled it. So this card is not here to tell us about what has happened, but what our part in it was. It is here to make us aware of our defects.

The Star is commonly known as the card of dreams. Inverted, it suggests that either we are dreaming for the wrong thing, or that our dreams aren’t coming true. Either way, it is important to accept that things are not the way that we would have them. And we need to accept that God’s Will is probably a little better than our own. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God’s World by mistake. Therefore in order to progress we need to accept things as they are, rather than wallowing in self pity if they are not what we want.

The Three of Wands talks to us of choices well made, and when it appears in the upright aspect, it tells us that we have made the right choice, and can feel confident in forging ahead with our plan of action. Once we have inventoried our own part in the situation, and become aware of our defects; and then accepted that things are exactly as they are supposed to be, then we can look at how we can change our attitude in order to improve our acceptance of the situation, then we can best decide how to move forwards in a beneficial manner.
