AlAnon: Courage to Change

As a long term member of various 12 step fellowships, I have a broad experience of counselling people who have been struggling with issues such as alcoholism and addiction, as well as women who have suffered abuse at the hands of alcoholics and addicts.  I also sponsor women through the steps in fellowships which handle co-dependent relationship issues. As a guest columnist I bring my experience of these steps to my readings, helping people to work through their underlying issues in a manner which will enable them to move forwards with gratitude.

My role here at British Tarot is to give readings to Agony Aunt style questions. Regardless of what our problems are, we can always find a solution hidden deep within the Twelve Step Program. It is a program of recovery which can work for anyone, not just those suffering from alcoholism.  That is why there are over two hundred twelve step fellowships in existence – try googling it!

Excerpt from Alanon’s Courage to Change

The reading I usually use is one that I designed myself from a concept I came across in AlAnon (a fellowship for relatives and friends of alcoholics).  It is based on the Triple A concept of Al Anon: Awareness, Acceptance, Action. The idea is that in order to address a problem in our life, we first need to become aware of what it is, and look at the underlying issues. Once we have done this, we need to accept them.  Until we accept the issues are causing us distress, we don’t have the motive to address them. And then, once we have accepted the issues that need addressing, we need to consider what action we can take to resolve them.

The tarot is an amazing tool for helping us at each stage in this journey of Awareness, Acceptance and Action. I can’t tell you how it works.  Is it synchronicity? Is it spirits talking to us? Is it the word of God?  Regardless of what our beliefs are, there is no doubt that Tarot and the Program go hand in hand.
